Each street corner has its share of discoveries, but it is on the Old Port that we take the pulse of the “White City”. We like to relax on the terrace and have lunch facing the ocean before leaving to visit the medieval towers, symbols of the city and witnesses of the prestigious maritime history of La Rochelle.

The visit continues to the Aquarium and its 12,000 marine animals, one of the largest private aquariums in Europe. To continue in the same vein, you will like to make a detour through the Maritime Museum and discover the collection ships moored in the old trawler basin.

Around the Old Port, the arcaded streets contribute to the charm of the place, as do the medieval half-timbered houses and private mansions that shipowners had built in the 18th century. Other jewels of La Rochelle’s heritage the Gate of the Grosse Horloge which separates the port from the city, the Town Hall half Gothic half Renaissance or the Henri II house, an exceptional and unique work of French history. Finally, to take a green break in the heart of the city, drive to Parc Charruyer.

Built at the end of the 19th century, this charming English-style park covers nearly 40 hectares with its small zoological park, winding, shady paths, large lawns and small streams… Do not delay too long, because it will soon be time to leave La Rochelle to reach the Ile de Ré and your La Grainetière campsite, where many other discoveries await you there too!
